Fat Quarter Friday: Reversible Car Seat Strap Covers

This week I made some car seat strap covers for Ada. We just got her a bigger car seat, and it didn't come with any strap covers. I didn't think it was a big deal, but she kept getting big red marks on her neck, so I decided to make some for her since they were $10+ at the store. I wanted them to be reversible with a cute cotton pattern on one side for the summer and a warm fuzzy minky on the other for winter.

Materials:
1 fat quarter
Minky scraps
Batting scraps
3" velcro

Step 1: Cut your fabric, minky and batting to be 4.5"x6". Cut two of each. I wanted my pads to be 4" long, but if you want your pads to be longer, adjust accordingly. I think 6.5"x6" would be a nice length as well.
Step 2: Cut your velcro into four equal sets; each set will be about 3/4". Position the pieces on one of the short sides of the fabrics 1/2" away from the edges. The scratchy pieces of velcro will need to go on the cotton and the soft pieces will go on the minky. Once you've positioned the pieces of velcro, sew them in place.
Step 3: We're now going to make our fabric sandwiches. First, take your cotton print and lay it out with the right side up with the velcro on the right. Next, we're going to take the minky and lay it right side down on top of the cotton print with the velcro on the left. Basically we want the velcro on opposite sides. Last place your batting on top. Repeat with the other set.
Step 4: Pin in place and sew around the edges with a 1/4" seam. Leave a 2" opening on each for turning.
Step 5: Turn your straps right side out and hand stitch up the opening. Now to give them a finished look do a quick little topstitch around the edge, about 1/8"-1/16" away from the edge. (If you hate hand sewing, go ahead and skip it since we're topstitching so close to the edge.)
You're all done; your little one's neck will thank you!

  1. What a wonderful little project!
I came over from 'I am Momma' a few weeks ago and have been following you ever since. Love your blog and all your creativity. Where do you find time for all these projects?? My son is 15 months old and I can't get anything done during the day.
    Regards from Singapore! :-)

    1. Anita,
Thanks so much for the kind words and for liking my little blog! Honestly, I'm not sure how I get so much done during the day. I usually craft during nap time and after she goes to bed at night. It's my way of unwinding; give me a good project and my audiobook and I'm in heaven!
      Thanks again!
